You eat pretty healthily, you watch your portions, and yet the scale won't budge. Sound familiar? After 40, a lot changes in your body, and small habits that used to be harmless can now hold you back. These are the five nutrition mistakes I see most often — and how to fix them.

1. Too little protein

Protein is the building block of your muscles, and after 40 you need more of it to maintain muscle mass. Many women eat too little protein, especially at breakfast. Aim for a protein source at every meal: eggs, quark, fish, chicken, legumes or a good shake.

2. Being too strict

Crash diets backfire. Eat far too little and you mainly lose muscle mass and your metabolism drops. The result: as soon as you eat normally again, the weight piles back on faster than ever. Sustainable weight loss should never feel like punishment.

Not eating more perfectly, but eating smarter — that's where the difference lies.

3. Underestimating liquid calories

A latte here, a glass of wine there, a smoothie as a snack. Liquid calories add up unnoticed and barely make you feel full. Become aware of what you drink, and more often choose water, tea or coffee without additions.

4. Skipping meals

Skipping breakfast and ending up starving on the sofa in the evening: a classic pitfall. Eating irregularly causes peaks and dips in your energy and blood sugar, making you reach for sugar faster. Regularity brings calm — in your head and in your body.

5. Ignoring your hormones

In and around menopause your hormone balance changes, and that affects how your body stores and burns fat. Nutrition that works with this — enough protein, fibre and healthy fats — helps you stay balanced and lose weight more easily.

How to move forward?

You don't have to change everything at once. Start with one point, for example more protein at breakfast, and build from there. Want a plan that fits your body and life exactly? During a free intake we'll look at it together.
