Menopause can really shake up your body: weight gain around the belly, less energy, hot flushes, poorer sleep and a mood that goes in all directions. Movement is not a luxury in this phase, but one of your most powerful tools.
Why training helps now
During menopause your oestrogen drops, you lose muscle mass faster and you become more sensitive to insulin. Training works on exactly these points: it maintains muscle mass, supports your bones, stabilises your blood sugar and helps against stress and low moods.
Focus on strength training
Strength training is the most valuable thing in this stage of life. It protects you against muscle and bone loss and keeps your metabolism active. Training with focus two to three times a week often delivers more than endless cardio.
Don't forget recovery
- Sleep: often disrupted during menopause, while you badly need it. Don't train too intensely late in the day.
- Rest days: your body recovers a little more slowly — more isn't always better.
- Stress management: walking, breathing and relaxation lower cortisol and help you find your balance again.
Work with your body, not against it.
Nutrition as an ally
Enough protein, fibre and healthy fats support both your muscles and your hormone balance. Crash diets are exactly the wrong choice now: they worsen muscle loss and fatigue.
